Four Frames: A Single Man

Interesting! If I had to pick four frames I couldn't go past Carlos, and Charley's dress. Probably the dog-sniffing moment too...

I love the walls in this movie. I love the entire movie, but the walls especially.

Maybe these can be responsive things. Do you guys use Tumblr? Perhaps cap four frames of your own and link to them here? Open invitation, that.

I took about twenty grabs from this initially, then wound up just going for what most stood out at a pinch from that crop. It's funny. Sometimes I try to highlight a motif or two when doing these, but mostly it's pretty intuitive. Such was the case in this instance.

@Jordi It's funny you mention the dog moment - it made the shortlist, but given I've never had a dog, perhaps that moment doesn't resonate as strongly with me as it does others.

@Kathy Get that quote to marketing at Icon. I want to see it on the inevitable special edition DVD re-release.

In your work DVD of the Year list did you mean "A Single Man" instead of "A Serious Man"? I sense a misprint.

Oh no. As much as I loved A Single Man (and even more so after this second viewing), A Serious Man was my favourite film of last year and hence my must-own DVD of 2010. Utter hardcore Coens-y perfection.

It's painful to say this but A Serious Man is the first Coens film I haven't liked, so little that I couldn't watch to the end. It really annoyed me for some reason.

Mike! I refuse to believe it! Sit down with it again. At the very least, it's worth it for what might well be the greatest closing shot of a Coens film ever. (For the record, it's one of my absolute favourites of theirs. Best screen spinning of the Book of Job I've ever seen - along with Chuck Jones' Duck Amuck, of course.)
