Tonguelash Podcast: After Hours Edition

tonguelash’s freshest installment is an affair of firsts: The first episode we wax cinematical sans Owen ‘The Late Breaker’ Vandenberg; the first appearance of Angela ‘Ms LiteraryMinded’ Meyer; and (most embarrassingly) the first time we hit the sauce and dial up the frank-o-meter.

Episode summary:

“Gerard and Ken are joined by Angela ‘Ms LiteraryMinded’ Meyer for an intimate, extended edition of the tonguelash podcast. Blocks are busted — nay, have their asses handed to them — as the intrepid trio not-so-boldly extol the intergalactic virtues of JJ Abrams’ new Star Trek, and — finally! — tonguelash keeps its Antipodean end up by reflecting on the distinctly disparate (though uniquely Australian) voices behind recent favourites, Samson & Delilah and Mary and Max. From here, however, all bets are off as your humble hosts open a bottle — and their hearts — and delve into a feature-length rumination on the elusive, soul-twisting humanity of Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York.”

Again, I thank Ken Erickson of Urban Mariner for lending his eloquently-administered insights, and I myself would like to apologise for how quickly I degenerate into a cussing, existentially-anxious puddle of disgrace once the whiskey starts flowing and we sink our teeth into Synecdoche — hardly my finest hour. This episode carries a big, red, flashing SWEAR WARNING and runs just shy of two hours as:

a) With so much material to wade through, I became lazy in the edit; and
b) We felt it would be fun to serve up a largely uncensored round-table reflection on a film which quite clearly left an indelible impression.

But mostly a).

Audio quality is as average as ever, and your continued patience is certainly cherished. But please sit tight — I can promise big things are afoot in the world of tonguelash...

And now, without further flurry or fanfare: tonguelash: After Hours Edition. To download the MP3 file of this episode, right click and ‘Save As’ here. To subscribe to the tonguelash RSS feed in iTunes (generously maintained by Mr. Vandenberg), click here.

As ever, your comments, feedback and scathing ridicule remain both welcome and enormously appreciated.

PS — and when mentioning Badlands, I of course mean Martin, and not Michael, Sheen...

Okay it's late and I'm not even half way through. Clearly, I have to see this synechdoche before I listen to any more.

It would indeed be advised. Thanks for listening though! And again, sorry it sounds like we're broadcasting Neptune...

I can by no means appreciate film at a level in which you guys conveyed, in particular the unbridled-enthusiasm about Synecdoche. But I greatly enjoyed listening to the passionate discussion between you three, and the contribution from Ms LiteraryMinded was great. No offense but Ken's eloquence can rarely be competed with and nor should it, none-the-less the rapport between the 3 of you was great. Keep these coming! :)

And so we shall! I could not agree more re. the greatness of Ange's involvement and the articulate elucidations of Ken, and thankyou for making time to take the thing in. And even more thanks for dropping by to comment.

...So, how would you like your $10?

Pfffft... don't listen to him man. If by eloquent you mean mumbling shyster? Then I can get on board with you. :P

If anything, I need to ride up on the mic more and bring a thesaurus. There must be like 8 different alternatives to 'really', or even 'reeeaaaally'.

Ange was wonderful, and she really (there it is again) sealed the deal on this show.

Great job putting this together Gerard, you make us sound like we know what we're doing. :)

I really do wish I'd been a touch more judicious in the edit; tightened, trimmed a little more. But like I said - I got lazy.

And man I swear a lot...

I really yell over you guys. I'll try and be more considerate next time. i.e. 'I WAIT TO BE OPENED UP'. So much enthusiasm. I will link from LM once I have posted a few posts which are timespace-driven.

Otherwise, awesome. Still feeling the overabundant love. xxx

Not at all - the grand prize for MOST INTERRUPTIVE is certainly claimed by yours truly. You come off wonderfully!

Hey G, K & A,

I listened to this podcast on the way to work today, and actually stood out the front so I could squeeze in the last 20 minutes. And it was fucking cold today guys (check weather reports 17/6/09 Melbourne) - we're talking fog (which Ange thinks is romantic, but I think is just foggy).

Anyway, I watched this film a couple of nights ago and it scramble egged my mind. I felt neurons collapsing and synapses fusing, so that my world now exists in two halves - pre- and post-Synecdoche.

Anyway, if I add any more unbridled enthusiasm to the smelting pot that you three created we may just have a dangerous situation, but I just wanted to say thanks for allowing us to eavesdrop on your discussion.

Grazi.

Samuel, thanks so much for not only listening but stopping by to share your thoughts. I'm glad it's not just we three who've felt the film so deeply (as I write, I'm listening to Little Person - can't stop...) and can empathise with the sensation of one's life feeling cleft in twain in its wake. It's genuinely stirred in me quite a terrible spiral of introspection, and as much as I want to hold that against it, such a reaction is so rare and beautiful a thing I couldn't possibly. Wonderful film. My favourite of the year? No, funnily enough (though certainly one of them), but one I'll hold dear in my heart for years to come.
